I combine my love for animals and fascination with Renaissance art by painting detailed portraits of creatures inspired by 15th and 16th-century portraiture. My goal is to highlight the natural dignity and intelligence of wild creatures, with a growing focus on endangered and threatened species.
The imagery in my work is fueled by some of my favorite topics -- art, history, folklore, the natural world, textiles, historic costume, trompe l'oeil techniques, and subtle visual humor. I aim to create portraits that convey not only the unique personalities of the subjects but also plant visual seedlings that empower the viewer to build their own entertaining biographies for these creatures. |
